May 2015 Recipient – Rogers Epstein

Rogers Epstein, a senior at Needham High School, loves to use his passion for education, specifically in mathematics, to help others. He has volunteered at the Cook’s After School program, a low income housing authority afterschool program, for the past two years. Rogers has volunteered his time to help middle school students with their homework. Having a love of math and experience from numerous math competitions, he is called upon mostly for math-related help. In particular, he has seen some students’ math grades rise over the year, which has strengthened the bonds he has with them. He was nominated by Penny Kirk at the Afterschool program who describes him as a reliable and patient tutor.

In his free time, Rogers has also done his best to help his friends when they have questions, and has met on a consistent schedule with some to invest in their improvement. His position as a co-captain on the Math Club for two years has also allowed him to inspire and teach classmates from the high school.

Rogers plans on attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study Mathematics. He plans on continuing to help children learn, and particularly to return to Cook’s After School when he can.
