Obituary: Wallace W. O'Hara, Radio Announcer, DJ

Wallace W. "Wally" O'Hara, 93,  of Needham, formerly of Osterville, died Jan. 23, 2013.

He was husband for 68 years to Ruth V. (Covell) O'Hara.

Born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, he was son of the late Alfred J. and Bessie M. (Lyons) O'Hara. His family moved to the Somerville area in 1929.

Wally was a graduate of Somerville High School. He was a World War II, United States Navy Veteran. His career started at the Bishop Lee Dramatic School in 1941 and he then graduated to summer stock in Maine. Wally entered the United States Navy Feb. 1, 1943 and was honorably discharged Nov. 8, 1946.

After leaving the Navy, he worked at WSAR in Fall River then moved to WBET in Brockton. He joined the announcing staff at WEEI in 1947. In the early days of his career, Mr. O'Hara was a DJ for a Jazz show. After many years at WEEI, He went on to WEZE. Upon retiring from Boston radio in 1983, Wally and his wife Ruth retired to Osterville. In his retirement, he worked for WOCB and was an integral part of the Cape Cod Radio Mystery Theatre.

A golf enthusiast, Wally worked part time as a starter at Holly Ridge Golf Course in Sandwich. He loved to read and listen to political talk radio shows.

Mr. O'Hara is survived by his children, Susan and her husband James Hopkins of Needham, Brian M. O'Hara of Boston and Carol and her husband Michael Fraini of Needham; his grandchildren, Bryan Hopkins and his wife Nancy of Framingham and Michaela, Julia and Olivia Fraini of Needham; and his great-grandchild, Cole Hopkins. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard O'Hara; and his brother, Raymond L. O'Hara.

A Funeral Service will be held in the Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave., Needham Tuesday, Jan. 28 at noon. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours are Tuesday, 11 a.m. to noon, prior to the service. Interment with Military Honors at St. Mary's Cemetery, Needham.
