Amy Sangiolo Launches Bid To Represent Newton At State House

The former City Councilor is running for the 11th Middlesex District seat after State Rep. Kay Khan said she would not seek re-election.

NEWTON, MA — Amy Sangiolo, who served on the Newton City Council for two decades and founded the Newton online newspaper Fig City News in 2022, is launching a bid to represent the city at the State House.

Sangiolo said on Thursday that she will see the 11th Middlesex District seat days after State Rep. Kay Khan said earlier this week that she would not seek re-election. The 11th Middlesex District consists of Newton's Ward 1 Precincts 2, 3; Ward 2; Ward 3 Precincts 1, 2, 3; Ward 4; and Ward 7 Precincts 2, 3, and 4.

"After 20 years as a City Councilor, I am excited to put my passion for public service and advocacy on behalf of Newton residents in our House of Representatives," Sangiolo said. "Kay has been a dedicated and effective state representative, and I am committed to carrying on her legacy of progressive leadership especially when it comes to climate change, health care, transportation funding and protecting seniors."

Sangiolo was part of the Board of Alderman and City Council from 1998 to 2017. She also serves on the boards of the Organization of Chinese Americans and the Dow Fund, which provides legal services for the Asian community.

She works in the Attorney General Office's Consumer Advocacy Response Division.

Sangiolo touted her efforts in Newton on affordable housing, open space preservation, municipal green expansion and school funding accountability.

"As proud as I am to serve through enacting public policy, nothing is more important than listening and providing direct constituent services," Sangiolo said in a candidacy statement to Patch. "Fighting for progressive values, ensuring people know what is happening in their community, and getting results. That has been my track record in Newton, and that is the approach I will take as your Representative at the State House.

"I look forward to spending the next several months knocking on doors all over the district, and hearing directly from the voters about their hopes and concerns."

Sangiolo earned her bachelor's degree from Barnard College and attended Rutgers Law School.

She is the mother of three grown children and lives in Auburndale with her husband, John, and their two dogs.
