Anyone who purchased the onions may still have them in their home due to the product's long shelf life, according to the recall. The onions should not be consumed. Instead, consumers are urged to return the product to Wegmans for a full refund.

Listeria is known to cause a serious infection called listeriosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms of an illness usually start within two weeks of eating food contaminated with listeria.

The disease primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. It’s rare for people in other groups to get sick with listeria, according to the CDC.

Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches and fatigue, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and seizures.
