Babka, Bourekas and Challah highlight what currently is a limited menu at this establishment, which has 2 other Boston area locations.

Challah is featured prominently on the menu at Bakey, which just began a soft-opening pop-up in Newton Centre. The bakery, with locations in Boston and Brookline, also features multiple flavors of babka and bourekas.

NEWTON CENTRE, MA — Local residents with a sweet tooth now have one more place to buy treats — at least on weekends — thanks to the opening of a Newton Centre pop-up shop by a popular Boston-area bakery.

Fig City News reported that Bakey, with locations in Boston and Brookline, has started to operate a "soft-opening pop-up" on weekends at 749 Beacon Street, in the space formerly occupied by Galit's.

Bakey was co-founded by Uri Scheft and Or Ohana. The former, according to the company website, is an internationally renowned Danish-Israeli baker who specializes in dough creations that reflect both European and Israeli baking traditions.

Scheft is the author of the 2016 book "Breaking Breads: A New World of Israeli Baking —Flatbreads, Stuffed Breads, Challahs, Cookies, and Legendary Chocolate."

According to Fig City News, Bakey currently is operating in Newton Centre from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, with the store bringing baked goods from its Brookline location every 30 minutes to ensure freshness.

The "soft-opening pop-up" suggests the bakery has long-term plans for the Newton Centre space, and Fig City News reported that plans are in the works for a full renovation, including ovens and customer seating.

Currently, Bakey's Newton Centre shop has a limited menu, with babka (chocolate, almond, raspberry, blueberry, apple, chocolate banana, and Mediterranean) and bourekas (cheese, spinach and cheese, and potato) among the most prominent items. The latter are baked, stuffed pastries popular in Israel and throughout the Middle East.

Challah, cookies and croissants also are on the menu.

The bakery features low-sugar options and also plans to include gluten-free items from its full menu once the store is up and running, according to Fig City News.

Bakey currently is accepting only cash and Venmo in Newton Centre.
