Newton Centre's Bigelow Cleaners Closing After 78 Years At Location

NEWTON CENTRE — A well-known dry cleaner that has operated out of the same Newton Centre location for nearly 80 years, is closing its doors this week, according to local reports.

Bigelow Cleaners, located at 217 Sumner St. at the corner of Langley Rd., will be shuttering at 4 p.m. Thursday, Fig City New reports.

According to the publication, brothers John and Peter Stavropoulos have owned and operated the business — easily identified by its neon sign — for nearly 42 years. The business actually began under previous owners in 1933 and moved to its current location in 1945.

The neon sign dates back to 1957, according to Fig City News.

John Stavropoulos said the store was closing due to high rent coupled with reduced business during and after the pandemic —with more people working from home and no longer needing to wear dress clothes.

According to Fig City News, the Bigelow owners have been calling customers this week, informing them of the news and making sure the customers are able to pick up their clothes.

The owners said the store does have off-site storage, so customers unable to pick up clothes by Thursday still are able to get their garments.
