NEWTON, MA – Upgrades to make the Newton Highlands Station more accessible are scheduled to begin in 2024, the MBTA announced Monday.

The project design is currently undergoing Section 106 review – which requires federal agencies to take into account the effects of their actions on historic properties – and is making progress toward the final design.

Upgrades to the Newton Highlands Station have been in the planning and design process since 2016, and include raised boarding platforms and multiple accessible pedestrian crossings, as well as rider amenities such as heated shelters, benches, bicycle storage, and in-station signs.

In December 2020, temporary accessibility improvements were installed at Newton Highlands as part of the Green Line D Track and Signal Replacement. The raised outbound platform will continue to serve riders until the final design is constructed.

The upgrades – part of a $32 million project budget and an $18 million construction budget – are expected to be completed by fall 2025.
