NEWTON, MA — Cappella Clausura, a Newton-based music ensemble dedicated to highlighting the work of female composers, has announced its first show of 2022, Renaissance Portraits, set to take place on Saturday, Jan. 15 and Sunday, Jan. 16.

This year, the ensemble of vocalists and players has a new home at Emmanuel Church in Boston, giving concerts there on Sunday afternoons while still performing in Newton at the Eliot Church. The Jan. 15 show will be held at the Eliot Church and the Jan. 16 show will take place at Emmanuel Church.

Featuring music by women composers from the Renaissance period, the program will spotlight reimagined Renaissance portraits from visual artist Fran Forman’s series Portraiture Redressed. In this groundbreaking series, Forman replaces historical subjects with a diverse array of contemporary models.

When describing her work, Forman said, “My portraits blur the boundaries between class and status, health and sickness, old and young, fear and joy, whimsy and solemnity.”

With Renaissance Portraits, the second program of Cappella Clausura’s Chrysalis season, the group is setting its sights on more diverse and inclusive horizons thanks to the support of federal and local grants.
