The Newton North Dance Team was first recognized as a varsity sport in the winter season of 2009-2010. After winning the last state championship during the 2021-2022 season, the team decided to seriously pursue going to Nationals this year and qualified over the summer.

"Since I started coaching in 2017, I’ve continued to challenge the kids season over season, each time with expectations higher than before,” Head Coach Caroline Nunberg said in an email. "The kids have pushed themselves and each other to meet my expectations, many times exceeding them.”

This year’s team consists of nine returning members and four rookies, Nunberg said. Each student-athlete has personal goals of high academic achievement, increasing their dance ability, learning effective time management, and building strong friendships.

"Every day at practice, I see the bond forming right in front of me as they work on synchronization of the choreography and tricks,” Nunberg added. "They push each other to perform bigger, and they constantly cheer each other on. Their dedication has brought us a lot of success in the last couple of seasons, and it’s been so much fun to have consistent and positive results and feedback from competitions and performances.”

The dance team’s goal is to raise a total of $20,000 to cover costs from sneakers to travel expenses. For more information or to make a donation, visit the team’s GoFundMe page. http://gofund.me/4d7d25b3
