Newton Planning Department Seeks Washington Street Pilot Plan Feedback

A public survey is available to gather input on the project shared at a recent public meeting.

NEWTON, MA — The Newton Planning and Development Department is looking for resident feedback on a pilot project to revamp Washington Street to make it safer, more user-friendly and help the area local businesses.

The pilot project was unveiled at a recent public meeting with a survey now being conducted to gauge feedback on the changes. Residents and local business owners and customers are asked to submit their feedback here by Dec. 17.

The improvements are targeted for the stretch from Chestnut Street in West Newton and Lowell Avenue in Newtonville, and include improved pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure for increased safety.

The feedback will be used to refine the conceptual plan this winter with a presentation to the City Council for approval in January or February.

The design will be finalized and advertised in the fall of 2024 with installation set to begin in 2025.

This project is the beginning of a longer-term plan to redesign Washington Street from West Newton to Wellesley, and from Newtonville east to Boston in future years.

The design for this project is funded with Host Community Agreement revenue from local retail cannabis stores. Construction will be funded with the city's federal American Rescue Plan Act funding.
