NEWTON, MA — A Newton police officer is being credited with helping save the life of a 5-day-old infant after he responded to a call of a baby girl who was not breathing.

Newton police said Officer Peterson Gilbert responded to the call on April 26 and took the child from her parents, delivered multiple back blows, and was able to dislodge milk that was blocking her airway.

Police said Coastal Medical Transportation Systems followed on the scene and took the infant to a local hospital for further evaluation. Police reported on the department's social media that Baby Naomi was "doing great" and that she and her parents stopped by the station to thank Officer Gilbert in person.
