Newton’s Needham Street Reconstruction Set To Begin In July

NEWTON, MA – Full-depth roadway reconstruction and paving work on Needham Street in Newton from Winchester Street to Tower Road will begin Sunday night.

The construction will begin each night starting at 8 p.m. and finish the next day at 6 a.m., MassDOT said.

The construction is expected to be completed by Monday, July 31.

In addition to the reconstruction work, a barrier currently on the east side of the bridge on Needham Street over the Charles River will be shifted to the west side, which will result in a temporary shift of the two travel lanes over the bridge. This lane shift will take place on Monday, July 10.

Newton drivers can use a detour in the area during the construction:

Vehicles traveling toward Highland Avenue from Needham Street:

• Proceed straight on Winchester Street to take a left onto Route 9
• From Route 9, take a left onto Elliot Street
• Continue straight and take a left onto Oak Street
• Take a right onto Needham Street

Vehicles traveling toward Highland Avenue from Needham Street:

• Proceed straight on Winchester Street to take a left onto Route 9
• From Route 9, take a left onto Elliot Street
• Continue straight and take a left onto Oak Street
• Take a right onto Needham Street

Vehicles traveling toward Winchester Street from Needham Street:

• Proceed straight on Needham Street to take a left onto Oak Street
• From Oak Street, continue straight to take a slight right onto Route 9
• Continue straight on Elliot Street to take a slight right onto Route 9
• Take the first exit off Route 9 to Winchester Street

Police will be present to ensure safety and facilitate the traffic change and message boards will be in place in advance of the work to display the most up to date information.

The construction is part of the Needham-Newton Corridor Project, which will improve traffic safety and multimodal accommodations (transit, bicycle, and pedestrian).
