Newton’s Rochelle Walensky Resigns From CDC As Pandemic Wanes: Report

NEWTON, MA – Newton resident Rochelle Walensky has submitted her resignation as head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on May 5, saying the waning COVID-19 pandemic was a good time to make the transition, AP reports.

Walensky’s last day will be June 30, CDC officials said.

Walensky, 54, was the agency’s director for just over two years.

“I have never been prouder of anything I have done in my professional career,” she wrote in her resignation letter, AP reports.

In a statement, President Joe Biden said “Walensky leaves CDC a stronger institution, better positioned to confront health threats and protect Americans.”

“We have all benefited from her service and dedication to public health, and I wish her the best in her next chapter,” Biden said.

The World Health Organization said on Friday that COVID-19 no longer qualifies as a global emergency, and the U.S. public health emergency and state-wide emergency will expire this week on Thursday, May 11.
