Newton Trash, Recycling Delay Amid Forecast Snowstorm

Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said a decision on schools and a snow emergency parking ban would be made early Tuesday morning.

While many other cities and towns in Greater Boston canceled school and put in place parking bans by Monday, Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said on Monday night that she was taking more of a wait-and-see approach.

NEWTON, MA — Newton trash and recycling pickup will be delayed one day this week as a forecast snowstorm for Greater Boston remained uncertain as of Monday night.

While many other cities and towns in Greater Boston canceled school and put in place parking bans by Monday, Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said on Monday night that she was taking more of a wait-and-see approach to a forecast that pointed to less snow as Monday progressed.

"If the weather forecast takes a turn for the worst and schools, City Hall and other municipal buildings need to close," she said in a message to the community Monday night. "Please also be mindful that the current worst-case forecast includes heavy, wet snow falling steadily during the day tomorrow, accumulating 1 to 2 inches per hour at times before ending between 5 and 8 p.m. If this occurs, we’ll need to call a Snow Emergency Parking Ban that would go into effect tomorrow morning, Tuesday, most likely at 9 a.m.

"Should this happen, cars cannot be parked on the street, in municipal parking lots, or school parking lots (including under solar canopies) to allow DPW crews and contractors to plow effectively. If left on the street or in city/school parking lots, cars may be towed."

Forecasts as of Monday night showed a nor'easter heading for southern New England has shifted south — and with it, the high snow totals that were initially predicted across a big section of the state.

On Monday afternoon, snow totals were downgraded from 8 to 12 inches along the Mass Pike corridor to as little as 2 inches close to Boston. The National Weather Service also shrunk
the areas in the state under a winter storm warning. The warning now encompasses southern Worcester County, plus Suffolk, most of Middlesex, Essex, Plymouth, Bristol and Barnstable County.

Fuller said Waste Management informed her office on Monday that trash and recycling pickup would be delayed by one day this week.
