NEWTON, MA — Nonantum's Cafe Martin West Street — which Adrienne Martin opened in tribute to her late husband, John, who died of ALS in 2018 — will close at the end of the month, according to a post on the cafe's social media account.

Martin cited the "ever-increasing cost of doing business" as the reason for the closure as of Dec. 31.

"In order to stay open I would have to change the mission and the vision that is Cafe Martin West Street and that is not something I am willing to compromise," she said.

Martin, however, said "it's all systems go until the end of the month" as she invited friends and fans to celebrate the restaurant and its mission over the next three weeks.

The name Cafe Martin comes from the backyard get-togethers that John used to have with his friends in the final months of his life during his two-year battle with the progressive neurodegenerative disease.

"We have been so very blessed to be part of this amazing community and to meet all of our customers who have become good friends and like family," Martin said. "Thank you, we love you and we are so sorry."
