Sonia Paine Of Sonia Paine Antiques Passes Away, 95

Sonia Paine once thwarted an armed robbery at her shop using a baseball bat and some quick thinking.

CHESTNUT HILL, MA — Sonia Listic Paine, owner of Sonia Paine Antiques in Newton Centre for nearly five decades, passed away on Sunday July 30 at the age of 95.

Known well in interior design circles in the area, she first opened shop in Chestnut Hill selling antique dishes in 1968 as a way to help save up to send her three sons to college one day. Her eye and love for antiques continued and her son and grandson eventually both joined her family business.

Paine was a tough cookie. In the 1990s she thwarted an armed robbery with a baseball bat and pluck and the incident was reported widely.
