NEWTON, MA – The West Newton Cinema, an independent theater in the community for almost 90 years, could be closing its doors, reports Boston 25 News.

The building was sold to a developer last August, Susan Bernstein, a co-director of the West Newton Cinema Foundation, told Boston 25 News.

But there is still hope the theater could stay.

If the theater formed a non-profit and raised funds to buy back to building at the same price for which it was sold – $5.6 million – it could potentially stay.

So far, the theater has raised $1 million in funds to buy back the building, and has until August 2024 to raise the rest.
