Dorothy Mae Buckley (Calnan), 83

Dorothy Mae Buckley (Calnan) was the first woman in Peabody to work in the tanneries as a wet wheel operator at AC Lawrence.

PEABODY, MA – Dorothy Mae Buckley (Calnan), 83, of Peabody, Massachusetts, died May 10, 2017.

Dorothy lived and worked in Peabody most of her life. She was the first woman in Peabody to work in the tanneries as a wet wheel operator at AC Lawrence aka "short Dot." After retirement from the leather industry, she worked for many years at Warren Lunch. She went from leather wheeling to potato peeling. Dottie loved games of chance. She played a mean hand of Penny-enny - "bring your pennies!," Bingo and Rummy 500 (she was very competitive). She loved to watch westerns and a good drink of whiskey! Anyone who knows her, knows she collected anything involving elephants. And she will be desperately missed by her bodyguard, fearless and featherless "Gabriel" the parrot.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph J. Calnan of Wilmington, and the late Eva M. Gauthier (Richardson) of Peabody. She is predeceased by her husband John Buckley; her grandson Michael Bik; her sisters June Debaredinias and Jean Hatfield; and her brother Albert Calman. She is survived by her five daughters Louise Melendez (of Peabody), Eva Barros (of Townsend), Jeannette Mangold (of Peabody), April Bik (of Peabody) and Roxanne Calnan (of Peabody). She is also survived by her sisters Georgianna Caminero (of Peabody), Lillian McKeon (of Williamstown, NJ), and Sylvia Rodriguez (of Woburn).
