A Moment of Paws

Lending a Helping Hand -- or Paw During the Holidays

(Animal Rescue League of Boston)

By Dr. Edward Schettino

The holidays can be a period of great joy and thanks for many – a time to bring family and friends together to celebrate everything that we are grateful for in life.

But, needless to say, 2020 has been a unique and challenging time in our present history. So now, more than ever, we should be thankful for what we have and be inspired to give back through compassionate actions.

In sitting down to pen this column I was reminded of a simple, yet powerful quote by Anna Harris Smith, founder of the Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL), that couldn’t be more relevant: “Kindness uplifts the world.”

How do we go about bringing kindness, joy, and positivity to the world around us? We don’t have to make a grand gesture to have an impact; there are plenty of ways to help our animal friends or fellow humans during this holiday season.

Support a nonprofit organization you’re passionate about. If you’re reading this column, you’re likely an animal lover. In that sense, I would suggest supporting an animal welfare organization like ARL, or your local animal shelter.

Remember, support doesn’t just mean a financial contribution.

Sign-up to Volunteer. I understand that the pandemic has made volunteering difficult, but if possible, become a volunteer. Studies have shown that volunteering increases self-esteem, reduces stress and if you’re just getting started in the professional world, a volunteer experience can do wonders for your resume. ARL has well over 500 volunteers who collectively donate tens of thousands of hours of their time annually, and their impact for the animals in our care is both amazing and absolutely critical.

Donate in-kind items. Do you have extra bedding, blankets, unused toys, or unopened cans or bags of pet food? Dropping off these supplies at an animal shelter not only ensure that animals have what they need to be happy and comfortable, but also allows the organization to focus its financial resources on direct animal care programs and services.

Want to make an impact safely from home? Many animal shelters, including ARL, also have online wish lists on sites like Amazon. You can make a purchase of animal treats, toys, and other necessary supplies, that are shipped directly to the organization of your choice.

Assist a neighbor in need. Reach out to a neighbor who may need help buying groceries, or a ride to their pet’s veterinary appointment.

If you’re able to give back this holiday season, 2020 is the year to do so. If we all spread joy and a spirit of unification, we will collectively be ready to tackle 2021 with renewed energy and positivity. “Kindness uplifts the world”.
