After Fire, Sumner School Students Get New Play Equipment

A new temporary play structure was unveiled Friday at the Roslindale school after an arson fire destroyed the playground in May.

ROSLINDALE, MA – A new play structure for students at Charles Sumner Elementary School in Roslindale opened Friday, months after an arson fire destroyed its playground.

The new equipment, a temporary fix for now, was funded by donations from community members, local businesses and city councilors. It was developed by PlayCubes and will be used while the playground undergoes a redesign and rebuild.

City officials and community leaders officially unveiled the structure Friday afternoon at the school.

The playground at Sumner Elementary was largely destroyed in a fire in May. The blaze, later determined to be arson, caused more than $10,000 in damage.

Three juveniles were arrested in June and charged in connection with the fire.
