Brookline Voters: We Don't Want the 2024 Olympics in Boston

During a Town Meeting vote, citizens took a symbolic stand against the Olympics plan. Boston is one of four applicant cities so far.

Brookline voters this week took a symbolic stand against plans for Boston to host the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Citizens at the annual Town Meeting voted 111 to 46 to support a measure demanding politicians pull the plug on the plans. Opponents have argued the huge price tag and influx of visitors for the Games will be detrimental to the region.

Earlier this year, Boston was selected for the U.S. Olympic bid. It’s one of four applicant cities—Rome, Hamburg, and Paris are the others. The International Olympic Committeewon’t decide on a host city until 2017.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is leading the campaign to bring the games to Beantown. On the other hand, there’s been a vocal coalition—including “No Boston Olympics” who think it’s a bad idea.

A recent WBUR poll found 51 percent of Boston residents support bringing the games to Boston, while 33 percent are against it. About 75 percent said there should be a referendum.
