Do You Want to Build a Snowman...Inside?

A DIY activity that will keep your kids out of the frigid weather, but also let them play in the "snow."

As kids sit inside on extremely cold days, you’ll undoubtedly hear two dreaded words: “I’m bored.” But below zero temperatures make it impossible to send your youngsters outside to burn off pent up energy.

So instead of popping Frozen into the DVD player for the 10,000th time, help your kids build a “fauxman.”

This simple DIY activity uses a mixture of cornstarch and shaving cream to make fake “snow” that jams all the fun of wintertime into an easy, inside activity. There’s no need to bundle up to play in this snow.

You’ll need:

  • 2 boxes of cornstarch
  • a can of foaming shaving cream
  • a box or plastic container
  • a newspaper, towel or sheet for easy cleanup
  • odds and ends like crayons, ribbon, yarn and buttons for decorating
  • optional: white or silver glitter

Instructions:

Dump both boxes of cornstarch into your container.

Gradually add the shaving cream, mixing it in until the mixture resembles coarse crumbles.

Add glitter to the mix for sparkly snow.

Lay a sheet, towel or newspaper over the area your kids will play.

Let them at it!

Let the kids form snowmen and decorate them with anything you have laying around the house. Ribbon, buttons and sticks work well. When they’re done with the snow, you can pack it up for another day. The mixture will stay good for at least a month.
