Paying it Forward: Widow's Incredible Act of Generosity Inspires Huge Salvation Army Donation

A widow recently donated her wedding ring to honor her late husband. Another widow offered $21,000 for the ring and hopes to return it.

An incredible act of generosity has inspired a huge donation for the Boston Salvation Army.

Earlier this month, an anonymous widow dropped her wedding and engagement rings in a Salvation Army kettle near North Station.

She included this note:

“I’ve dropped my wedding ring in your Red Kettle knowing that the money from its sale will buy toys for needy children,” she wrote. “In all seasons, my husband was a giver. I especially remember his joy in giving at Christmastime, especially to those in need.

“To honor his memory, I donate this ring. I’m hoping there’s someone out there who made lots of money this year and will buy the ring for ten times its worth. After all, there’s no price on love or the sentimental value of this ring. But money will help the kids. May everyone have a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!”

On Monday, the Salvation Army said another widow offered $21,000 for the rings and wants to return them to their owner. The sum is more than 10 times to value of the rings.

“I want to be involved in this because it’s about the spirit of Christmas, the spirit of giving,” the widow told Salvation Army officials, according to a statement. “My wish is that the rings can be returned to this woman who gave them up in memory of her husband for the sake of children at Christmas.”

She said the story of the rings touched her and reminded her of her husband.

“I miss him dearly, but my husband would be happy that I am doing this,” she said.
