Roslindale Job Fair: What To Expect If You're Looking For Work

The job fair is being hosted by the City's Office of Diversity.

ROSLINDALE, MA — A Neighborhood Career Fair in Roslindale will take over the Community Center Thursday in a city-led effort to help connect residents with jobs and area businesses with diverse candidates.

Participants can come explore employment opportunities, meet with participating employers and find career opportunities in areas that include municipal government and the private sector.

Job fairs are often seen as a way for folks searching for work to maximize time and effort. It's almost impossible to visit 35 prospective employers in one day to chat with them in any other setting outside of a job fair.

Some of the time, the organization's representitives won’t be able to discuss specific jobs, but they will be able to talk with you about the business, the kinds of jobs generally available, requirements, career paths. In other cases, they’re recruiting for specific internships or jobs and they’ll accept resumes to take back with them for hiring managers, so bring as many copies as you can.

Some tips if you're looking for work and plan to go to the job fair?

  • Take a look at the list of organizations coming and plan to head to the ones that are most relevant to your interests.
  • Although conversations here are less formal than interviews, avoid T-shirts, jeans, short skirts, sportswear, and hats. It’s not a date, so it’s best to keep it conservative.
  • Turn off your cell phone.
  • When meeting employers, introduce yourself in a confident manner, with a smile, firm handshake, and good eye contact.
  • Bring copies of your resume to leave with employers.
  • Have a pen and paper so you can take down information.
  • As you leave each rep, learn what happens next, and what, if anything, you should do to advance your candidacy. Ask for a business card so you can maintain future contact and send follow-up thank-you notes (handwritten or by email) to those employers in whom you’re most interested.
