SALEM, MA — Salem Public Schools officials wasted little time making a call on school for Tuesday amid the forecast snowstorm with no school and no in-person school events across the district.

The call comes ahead of what was forecast at the time to be among the North Shore's biggest storms of the past two years with up to 6 inches or more expected during an intense stretch of snow between Tuesday morning and late Tuesday afternoon.

There will be a snow emergency parking ban in effect in Salem starting at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, including the downtown district.

During the snow emergency parking ban vehicles must be removed from city streets or the vehicle will be ticketed and towed.

Snow rates went into effect in the Museum Place and South Harbor Garages at 4 p.m. on Monday.

The Destination Salem Visitor Information Center and public restrooms will also be closed for the day as will the Salem Public Library.

Forecasters saw the track of the storm shifting slightly south compared to predictions made over the weekend.

Forecasts now show a nor'easter heading for southern New England has shifted south — and with it, the high snow totals that were initially predicted across a big section of the state.

On Monday afternoon, snow totals were downgraded from 8 to 12 inches along the Mass Pike corridor to as little as 2 inches close to Boston. The National Weather Service also shrunk the areas in the state under a winter storm warning.

The warning now encompasses southern Worcester County, plus Suffolk, most of Middlesex, Essex, Plymouth, Bristol and Barnstable County.
