Salem State's Viking Hall To Be Renamed Charlotte Forten Hall
The residence hall is being renamed after the school's first African-American graduate.
SALEM, MA — Salem State University will rename one of its residence halls after Charlotte Forten — the school's first African-American graduate — as part of the university's Black History Month events.
Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz, the daughter of Malcolm X, will also deliver a keynote address as part of SSU'S Black History Month celebration on Feb. 27.
Viking Hall will then be renamed Charlotte Forten Hall on Feb. 29 in honor of the 19th-century abolitionist, educator, writer, poet, translator and women's rights activist.

The school will also host the "Afro-Latinx Experience: Diversity within the Black Diaspora" forum on Feb. 21 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Martin Luther King Jr. Room at the Ellison Campus Center.
Shabazz will deliver her address on Feb. 27 at EllisonCampus Center in Veterans Hall from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

The school's annual Black History Month Dinner will be on Feb. 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Veterans Hall.
The Charlotte Forten Hall dedication will be on Feb. 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Starbucks, Harrington Campus.
