What's Open, Closed On Thanksgiving In Stoughton

STOUGHTON, MA — Thanksgiving will be celebrated this year on Thursday, Nov. 26, marking the official start of the holiday season.

The Thanksgiving holiday goes back to 1789, when President George Washington chose a day in November for public thanksgiving and prayer. But it took more than a half century before Thanksgiving was recognized as a federal holiday. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln set the last Thursday in November as a federal holiday. And so it has gone. Homes across the country have filled with family and friends and given thanks over a table of turkey and fixings.

This year, the holiday will likely look very different for most as it comes amid a pandemic and a call from the governor to keep celebrations small and within the household. One thing that will look the same? The holiday closures.

Here's a list of what will be open and closed this year on the day:

Banks: Banks will be closed on Thanksgiving.

Bars and restaurants: Open at owner's discretion

Courts: Courts will be closed.

Federal, State and Municipal offices: Government offices are closed.

Libraries: Public libraries will be closed.

Mail: The United States Postal Service will not deliver mail on Thursday. And UPS and FedEx pickup and delivery services will not be available, either. UPS Express Critical, and FedEx Custom Critical will both still be available.

National parks: The National Park Service will be closed.

Retail: Stores are closed in Massachusetts on the holiday.

Schools: Schools will be closed.

Trash: Pick up for both trash and recycling is pushed back a day, meaning if you have Thursday service, it will be pushed to Friday.

Grocery stores, and package stores: Closed.
