SUDBURY, MA — This Halloween, many Massachusetts parents are wondering: is it safe to send kids out trick-or-treating?

Not because of dangerous drivers or razor-blade tainted treats, but because mosquitoes carrying deadly diseases like West Nile and Eastern equine encephalitis may still be out there. The blood-suckers are especially active at dusk, which overlaps with prime trick-or-treating time.

Mosquitoes won't be gone for the year until the first "hard" frost of the season, which hasn't happened yet, and likely won't before Halloween.

Some local towns are asking parents to end outdoor trick-or-treating near sunset, which happens at 5:42 p.m. this year. But if you want to avoid the small but very real risk of a harmful mosquito bite, there are plenty of indoor trick-or-treating events happening this year.

We've compiled several happening in the MetroWest and Worcester areas. (Descriptions provided by the respective event hosts.)
