SUDBURY, MA — The 2024 presidential race between Joe Biden and Donald Trump will be the marquee race this November, but voters in Massachusetts will also be voting to elect (or re-elect) state House and Senate candidates.

But 2024 will be a relatively sleepy year for state legislative races. Just 40 state representatives and 11 senators are facing challengers this year, according to the Secretary of the Commonwealth — including local lawmakers.

The deadline to file to run for legislative seats passed on Tuesday, offering a glimpse into the races that will be on the ballot in November. State Rep. Carmine Gentile, D-Marlborough, and state Sen. Jamie Eldridge will both go unchallenged. State Sen. Michael Barrett, D-Lexington, and Senate President Karen Spilka, D-Ashland, will also coast through the election.

The lone exception in the area is state Rep. David Linksy, D-Natick, who represents the southern half of Wayland. Linksy will aim for a 13th term in 2024 with a challenge from Natick Democrat Jaymin Patel, who also ran against Linsky in 2020.

Although the candidate filing deadline passed on Tuesday, candidates have until 5 p.m. Friday to withdraw from the 2024 election. The Secretary of the Commonwealth will publish the official list of 2024 candidates on June 4.
