Abandoned Property in Sudbury

What can be done about it?

Former Gas Station

The Story of the Abandoned Gas Station

In the early 1980s, the Old Colony gas station was a popular stop for travelers and locals alike. Families would pull in for a fill-up, and kids would run to the small convenience store for a treat. The station was a community hub, a place where neighbors caught up on the latest news and shared stories.
But as the years went by, the station’s fortunes waned. Newer, more modern gas stations opened nearby, and the Old Colony station couldn’t keep up. Eventually, it closed its doors, and the property was left to decay.

The Current State

Today, the gas station is a shadow of its former self. The wooden shed on the property is unsafe and unsecured, posing a hazard to anyone who ventures too close. Another building has an open window, inviting vandals and trespassers. The weeds have grown tall, reaching heights of three to four feet, and they obstruct the view for motorists approaching the intersection, creating a safety hazard.

What Can Be Done?

Revitalizing the property would require a concerted effort from the community and local government. Here are some steps that could be taken:

  1. Clearing the Weeds: Regular maintenance to clear the overgrown weeds would improve visibility for motorists and enhance the overall appearance of the property.
  2. Community Involvement: Engaging the community in a cleanup effort could foster a sense of ownership and pride. Volunteers could help with clearing debris and maintaining the property.
  3. Repurposing the Site: The property could be repurposed for community use. Ideas could include turning it into a small park, a community garden, or even a historical site that pays homage to its past.
  4. Seeking Funding: Grants and funding from local government or historical societies could provide the necessary resources for revitalization efforts.

A Vision for the Future

Imagine the old gas station transformed into a vibrant community space. Picture a small park with benches and flower beds, where families can gather and children can play. The buildings, once eyesores, could be removed, restored and maybe repurposed, perhaps as a small museum or community center. The intersection, now clear of weeds, would be safer for all who pass through.
With a little effort and a lot of heart, the abandoned gas station could once again become a cherished part of Sudbury’s landscape, a testament to the power of community and the importance of preserving our history. Daniel Cetrone, Sudbury Resident
