Bridges® By Epoch at Sudbury Resident Helps Local Dogs

Wanting to give back to the community, Mike Lightner found a way to help local shelter dogs

(Vicky Hochman)

SUDBURY, MA (July 2024) – Mike Lightner of Bridges® by Epoch at Sudbury, a premier provider of exceptional memory care, has found a way to make a “pawsitive” impact on the local community by donating old newspapers to Save a Dog, a Massachusetts-

based humane society focused on abandoned dogs.

Lightner, who has been a resident at Bridges® by Epoch at Sudbury for about a year, likes to read the newspaper every morning, and wanted to find a way to recycle his old papers after he was done reading them. A few months ago, he asked Life Enrichment Director Kristin Johnson about recycling, and that was when Johnson had a lightbulb moment. She thought of the local dog shelter, Save a Dog, right near Bridges® by Epoch at Sudbury and reached out to the shelter to see if they would have any need for these recycled newspapers. The staff at Save a Dog told Johnson they were in desperate need of more newspapers to use for things like puppy potty training, bedding, and cleanup for all the dogs in the shelter.

“Mike had a dog growing up and loves dogs,” said Johnson. “When we reached out to Save a Dog about Mike donating his newspapers, not only were they grateful for the donation, but they wanted to give Mike a private tour of the shelter and rolled out the red carpet for him. Mike loved it – it really boosted his mood. He’s still talking about the dogs!”

“I was happy to help the dogs,” said Lightner. “We used the Bridges van to bring the newspapers I have been collecting for the puppies. We met a group of volunteers there who made sure the dogs who would be adopted were well taken care of and had what they needed. It was very secure and clean.”

Now, Lightner is continuing to save his old newspapers to give to the shelter. Plus, Save a Dog is talking to Johnson about doing more events at Bridges® by Epoch at Sudbury, like an adoption event hosted in the Bridges courtyard and dog therapy visits for the residents. The ongoing partnership between Save a Dog and Bridges® by Epoch at Sudbury is a win for everyone – human and canine.
