SUDBURY, MA — A planned groundbreaking for a new stretch of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail in Sudbury will be held at a new location, according to the town.

Sudbury officials and trail supporters will join MassDOT CEO Gina Fiandaca at the Parkinson Parcel at 10 a.m. Saturday to ceremonially start construction on a new 5.1-mile stretch from Powder Mill Road in Concord to just north of Route 20 in Sudbury.

The new section of trail will build off completed sections in Concord, Acton, Westford, Chelmsford and Lowell. More than 12 miles of trail has been completed across those towns. Work is ongoing on a section in Concord that crosses Route 2.

A second section of the trail will begin construction in the coming years in Sudbury stretching from Route 20 to the Framingham line. After that section is complete, the remaining 3.4 miles through Framingham will be the last piece.

Saturday's groundbreaking will begin at 10 a.m. at the field at 40 Hudson Road (Route 27). The event will be held rain or shine — and the forecast for Saturday shows a 70 percent chance of rain.
