SUDBURY, MA — The town will use Friday to remember beloved Peter Noyes Elementary art teacher Colby Caravaggio, who died in March due to cancer.

The Sudbury Select Board recently issued a proclamation honoring Caravaggio, and making the June 7 observance official. As part of the observance, the Peter Noyes School is asking residents to take part in a community art project: decorate homes, mailboxes and any other prominent location with the letter "C" in Caravaggio's memory.

"For the last 25 years, Colby Caravaggio has inspired thousands of students with his creativity, talent, and enthusiasm for students’ artistic expression," the select board proclamation said. "[And he] embodied a rare spirit of bravery, selflessness, positivity, kindness, and dedication as a role model to our community."

Caravaggio, 54, was first diagnosed with cancer in July, and continued to teach at Peter Noyes Elementary until Feb. 16. He died March 6, according to his obituary. Apart from teaching, Caravaggio was an experienced potter, and held an annual pottery auction that benefited local charities, from Autism Speaks to the Sudbury Food Pantry.
