SUDBURY, MA — Construction will officially begin Wednesday on a new fire station along Route 20 in Sudbury.

In May 2021, Sudbury Town Meeting approved spending $4.3 million to upgrade and expand the station at 550 Boston Post Road. The town borrowed about $3.3 million of the total cost, with the rest coming from existing funds.

The expansion will add four new bunk rooms, a kitchen and other facilities to support four firefighters and an ambulance. Sudbury Fire Department Chief John Whalen has said new age-restricted developments along Route 20 have added hundreds of emergency calls to that area in recent years, making the larger station necessary.

Wednesday's groundbreaking will begin at 1 p.m. at the future expanded station, and will include remarks from town officials. Anyone who attends should park next door to the station in the Meadow Walk shopping plaza. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held inside the station's truck bay.
