SUDBURY, MA — The East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project will be in Sudbury this week spraying to control mosquitoes — just a few days after the reemergence of West Nile and Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Massachusetts.

Trucks will be out spraying Tuesday around sunset near Belcher Drive, Hampshire Street, Grindstone Lane, Atkinson Lane, Intervale Road and Barton Drive. The trucks will be spraying Zenivex E4, a pesticide used to kill adult mosquitoes.

"Mosquito control applications of Zenivex E4 do not pose a significant risk to people or their pets due to the low toxicity and the small amount used to control mosquitoes. As with any pesticide, people should minimize their exposure. If residents see a spray truck approaching, they are advised to go indoors for a few minutes while the spray dissipates," the mosquito control project said.

The spraying follows the discovery last week of mosquitoes in Quincy carrying West Nile and EEE in Plymouth County. EEE was also detected in mosquitoes in 2023, but those positive samples were not discovered until September.

Earlier this spring, health departments across Massachusetts — including in Sudbury — began seeing very high numbers of mosquitoes caught in traps. Health officials say EEE and West Nile could pose a higher risk to humans this year for the first time since the 2019-20 outbreak.
