Robert Flynn, Longtime Mechanic And Machinist, Dies At 81

Flynn loved English Setters and old cars, and was remarkably handy.

SUDBURY, MA — Robert J. Flynn, 81, of Sudbury, formerly of Lexington, died Friday, February 10, 2017, in Framingham. He was a loving and devoted husband to Carole A. (Santoro) Flynn for over 48 years and was the son of the late Rose A. (Cassidy) and John F. Flynn, of Concord and Acton.

Mr. Flynn was raised and educated in Woburn and the Boston area and attended Wentworth Institute evenings for five years. He was employed as an auto mechanic & machinist for several years at area companies, including RCA and Auto Engineering, before working for himself, followed by over 22 years as a mechanical technician at Digital Equipment Corporation from which he retired.

Bob could successfully turn his hand to many tasks, as evidenced by the tremendous amount of renovations he did on the antique home he purchased prior to marriage. He was a life-long enthusiast of antique automobiles and Classic cars and was very knowledgeable on most makes. He also enjoyed classic movies and many types of music. Mr. Flynn took great delight in his children and grandchildren and their development and accomplishments.

He also loved his four English Setters through all their years, and currently Annie, a very smart Brittany Spaniel. In addition to his wife, Mr. Flynn leaves his beloved children and their families: John R. and Laura M. Flynn of Sudbury, Charles T. and Gretchen E. Flynn of Berlin, and grandchildren Margaret, Abigail, Ashley and Michael, and his brother John F. Flynn, Jr. of Maynard. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Margaret Santoro of Taunton, Loretta Santoro of Norwood, Jean Santoro of Norton, Massachusetts, and Marie & husband Daniel Bair of Anchorage, Alaska, their families; several cousins, and countless friends.

Funeral services will be held from the Duckett-J. S. Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Road, Rt. 20, Sudbury, Saturday, Feb. 18, at 9:00 AM followed by a funeral mass at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 160 Concord Rd., Sudbury at 10:00 o'clock. Visitation at the funeral home will be Friday from 3:00 to 7:00 PM.
