Sudbury Boy In Cape Cod Boating Accident Dies

Sudbury's superintendent announced grief counseling for the school community.

SUDBURY, MA—An eight-year-old boy who was among those on a capsized boat on the Cape Cod Canal last week has died.

Sudbury schools Superintendent Anne Wilson sent a letter to the community on Sunday. "It is with sadness and a heavy heart that I share with you the untimely death of Harry O’Connor, third-grader at Nixon Elementary. Harry and his family were involved in a boating accident earlier in the week."

O'Connor was one of 12 people rescued after his family's boat capsized in Buzzards Bay near the channel, reports The Cape Cod Times. He was unresponsive and brought to Tobey Hospital in Wareham.

Wilson called for the community to extend sympathy to the O'Connor family, including Harry's parents Laura and Paudie, and his siblings Ellen, Charlie and Joe.

The service is expected to be be held at the Our Lady of Fatima Church before the family returns to Ireland. Information on the service will be provided once arrangements have been finalized.

"Nothing compares to the grief and sadness of losing a child," wrote Wilson. "While the family is the most impacted, many others share in the profound sadness of this tragic event. Adults and children may each experience the news of Harry’s death in very different ways."

There will be counselors available between 1-3 p.m. on Monday, July 31, at both Nixon Elementary and Curtis Middle School.
