SUDBURY, MA — Sudbury's annual family Pride day will take place this weekend, marking a month that celebrates the struggles of LGBTQ+ people locally and across the nation.

Sudbury's Pride event follows a select board proclamation affirming the town's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and recognition of Pride month.

"LGBTQ+ individuals — especially youth who defy sex or gender norms — face bullying and harassment in educational settings and are at a disproportionate risk of self-harm and death by suicide," the proclamation said. "We recognize the resilience and determination of the many individuals who are fighting to live freely and authentically, and we affirm our obligation to uphold the dignity of all people, and dedicate ourselves to protecting the most vulnerable among us."

Pride Month takes place every June to mark the Stonewall Uprising, a turning point in the struggle for equality among people who identify as LGBTQ+. New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969. Such raids were common, but patrons fought back, resulting in days of violent clashes across Greenwich Village.

Sudbury's family Pride event will take place June 9 beginning at 2 p.m. at Curtis Middle School, 22 Pratts Mill Road. The event will feature performances, crafts and food. The event organizers are still accepting vendors to set participate in the celebration.
