SUDBURY, MA — A Sudbury mom will run the 2022 Boston Marathon to support a Boston diabetes research and treatment center — a cause that's close to home.

Felicia O'Brien has competed in eight previous Boston Marathons, and this will be her second time running to raise money for the Joslin Diabetes Center. O'Brien's son, Will, 15, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 10.

O'Brien is aiming to raise $7,500 for Joslin, and was close to hitting that goal as of Tuesday, according to her fundraiser page. A larger group of runners will be competing in the race to raise money for Joslin as part of the Meaning to Your Miles team.

The 2022 race will mark a number of milestones for O'Brien. It'll be her 14th total marathon, and the first year Boston has returned on its traditional Patriots' Day Monday since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. It'll also mark five years since Will O'Brien's diabetes diagnosis.

“Will living a normal life wouldn't be possible without the researchers at Joslin,” she said. “They play a big part in how he lives his life.”
