SUDBURY, MA — A new horror movie filmed last year around Sudbury's Wayside Inn premiers this week in theaters

"The Unholy" is the film version of the 1983 novel "Shrine" by James Herbert. The movie centers on a young deaf girl who gains the ability to speak, hear and heal the sick after a supposed visit from the Virgin Mary.

"As word spreads and people from near and far flock to witness her miracles, a disgraced journalist hoping to revive his career visits the small New England town to investigate. When terrifying events begin to happen all around, he starts to question if these phenomena are the works of the Virgin Mary or something much more sinister," the Sony Pictures synopsis says.

"The Unholy" was filmed in spring and fall 2020 in the Wayside area, according to the Wayside Inn Foundation. The release was timed for Good Friday and Easter.

"Sony filmed broadly on the property using interior and exterior locations with the agreement that, given that the film was fictional and not based on any true historic accounts, the locations would serve as fictional locations or sets for the movie," the foundation said. "However, location credit at the end of the film was permitted."

"The Unholy" hits theaters on Friday, and won't be immediately available on any streaming platform. The movie will be playing at the AMC Dine-In theater in Framingham and the Blackstone Valley 14 in Millbury.
