LOWELL, MA — The Lowell Spinners 2020 season is officially canceled, the team announced Tuesday. Major League Baseball informed Minor League Baseball that it would not be providing players to affiliated teams, this year, even as MLB attempts to proceed with a shortened season.

The Lowell Spinners are a single A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox; without Red Sox players, they are on hiatus.

"Though we are disappointed by MLB's decision, the Spinners remain committed to continuing to work with the City of Lowell, Middlesex County, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts authorities to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all citizens during this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic," the team said.

The team looks forward to delivering "Spinnertainment" in 2021, they said. Ticket deposits and purchases, plus 10 percent of ticket value, will be credited toward 2021. All ticket-related questions should go to [email protected].

The team's future beyond 2020 is potentially in question, as well: it was one of 42 teams reportedly in MLB's sights for disaffiliation.

The majority of the teams in MLB's sights would be put into a "Dream League," essentially an independent league for non-drafted players looking for their break. Thirteen are targeted for outright elimination.
