Tewksbury Gets 6 New Liquor Licenses Through Population Growth

The town's state allocation increased significantly after the 2020 census, the town manager told the Select Board Tuesday.

TEWKSBURY, MA — Tewksbury recently gained seven new alcohol licenses due to population growth, the town manager told the Select Board Tuesday.

The state alcoholic beverage commission informed the town of its new allocation post-2020 federal census. The town gained:

  • Three restaurant all alcohol licenses, bringing the total to 33,
  • One restaurant wine and malt licenses, bringing the total to seven,
  • One all alcohol retail license, bringing the total to seven
  • One wine and malt retail license, bringing the total to seven.

Tewksbury's population grew more than 8 percent from 2010 to 2020, according to the decennial census.

Tewksbury also received five all alcohol restaurant licenses and two wine and beer restaurant licenses via special legislation last year. The special licenses must be used by Feb. 2024; none have been claimed so far.

There has been a lot of interest in the all alcohol retail license, Town Manager Richard Montuori said.
