VIRTUAL BESTSELLING AUTHOR SERIES: Janice Nimura Discusses 'The Doctors Blackwell' ON ZOOM (*RR)

Tuesday, March 9, 7pm

Join Janice Nimura for a presentation based on her new New York Times bestselling book, The Doctors Blackwell: How Two Pioneering Sisters Brought Medicine to Women and Women to Medicine. Elizabeth Blackwell believed from an early age that she was destined for a mission beyond the scope of "ordinary" womanhood. Though the world at first recoiled at the notion of a woman studying medicine, her intelligence and intensity ultimately won her the acceptance of the male medical establishment. In 1849, she became the first woman in America to receive an M.D. She was soon joined in her iconic achievement by her younger sister, Emily, who was actually the more brilliant physician. Exploring the sisters’ allies, enemies, and enduring partnership, Janice P. Nimura presents a story of trial and triumph. Together, the Blackwells founded the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children, the first hospital staffed entirely by women. Both sisters were tenacious and visionary, but their convictions did not always align with the emergence of women’s rights―or with each other. From Bristol, Paris, and Edinburgh to the rising cities of antebellum America, this richly researched new biography celebrates two complicated pioneers who exploded the limits of possibility for women in medicine. The book received starred reviews in Publisher's Weekly, Library Journal, Kirkus and Booklist.

Revolution To Pandemic -- What Keeps Making Boston A World Innovation Capital ON ZOOM (*RR)

Thursday, March 11, 7pm

Join Dr. Robert Krim and Alan Earls for a presentation based on their acclaimed new book, Boston Made: From Revolution to Robotics-Innovations that Changed the World. Enjoy a fascinating look at how Boston became and remains a global center for innovation -- told through 50 world-changing inventions. Boston Made: From Revolution to Robotics-Innovations that Changed the World tells the remarkable story of how Boston has spawned an unparalleled number of world-changing innovations, encompassing every area of human endeavor, in its 400-year history. The book is built around 50 innovation stories and images that author and innovation expert Dr. Robert Krim and co-author Alan Earls have chosen from a list of more than 400 critical innovations uncovered in a 12-year study involving hundreds of experts. It answers questions like: What led Alexander Graham Bell to be able to invent the telephone in Boston, rather than in one of the three other cities he had called home? Why was the computer core memory invented in Boston? Why was the first organ-transplant in the world performed in Boston? And why was Mass the first state to abolish slavery, long before others? Crucial for all food lovers, why was the chocolate chip cookie here? And, critical to our own time, the Kendall Square world biotech center is home to Moderna and Pfizer research facilities, both central organizations in the critical effort to produce a coronavirus vaccine.

Suffragettes in Corselettes -- The Evolution Of Our Underwear & Our 19th Amendment ON ZOOM (*RR)

Saturday, March 13, 10:30am

For centuries, women have allowed themselves to be squeezed, twisted, and squished to conform to desired shapes. The history of underwear reveals a lot about women’s changing roles in society – how we perceive ourselves, and how we’re viewed by others. The 1910s saw an end to the hourglass figure with a tiny waist. Women were finally able to breathe and move more freely. Did the demise of tightlacing help women gain the right to vote in 1920? Underwear matters. Presented by Ehris Urban & Velya Jancz-Urban of The Grounded Goodwife. Their fun and humorous presentations look at history with a new eye by including topics not generally learned in school.
