Tewksbury Job Seekers Networking Group: Tips For Job Seekers ON ZOOM (*RR)

Tewksbury Genealogy Group ON ZOOM (*RR)

The new Tewksbury Genealogy Group, which generally meets the fourth Tuesday evening of every month, is open to everyone who's interested in genealogy. Each meeting -- which will take place via Zoom -- consists of a presentation from a guest speaker (typically a professional genealogist), followed by a period where members can briefly share their latest genealogy research, and then the library will share a genealogy resource its patrons can access for free. The presentation for the January 26 meeting is "Working With Your DNA Results" with Sandy Murray. DNA analysis ranges from basic matchlist comparisons to reconstructing part of the genome of deceased ancestors. This talk will utilize some of the intermediate tools available at various sites including color dot sorting, shared matching, chromosome browsers and chromosome painting, the WATO tool, spreadsheets and auto-clustering. It will compare the sorting tools at My Heritage (Theory of Relativity) and Ancestry (ThruLines) - both versions of descendancy research utilizing DNA and trees. If attendees have completed a genealogical DNA test from any company, they should bring a basic list of close DNA matches (sharing down to about 90 centiMorgans/1.40% or 2-3rd cousin level) to be used in an interactive exercise. Led by Dr. Sandy Murray. After a career as a research cell biologist, Murray now works with DNA in a genetic genealogy setting. She is particularly interested in helping genealogists who have received their "DNA results" and "matches" but have no idea how to work with them. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

ARMCHAIR TRAVEL: Kilimanjaro – Journey To The Roof Of Africa ON ZOOM (*RR)

Peter Christoph will take you on a photographic journey through 5 climate zones, from tropical rain forest to arctic conditions, in his quest for the summit of 19,340 foot high Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa, and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. He includes behind the scenes photos of how he trained for his adventure. Christoph is a well-known speaker and award-winning nature photographer based in Lancaster, MA. He has presented to the Photographic Society of America (PSA), New England Camera Club Council (NECCC,) and the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), in addition to Mass Audubon, the National Wildlife Refuge System, numerous camera clubs, birding clubs, and libraries. The past president of the Camera Club of Central New England, he has received many prestigious national and international awards and medals. Bestselling authors Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child will discuss their latest book, The Scorpion's Tail, in this Zoom webinar. The thrillers of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child "stand head and shoulders above their rivals" (Publishers Weekly). Preston and Child's Relic and The Cabinet of Curiosities were chosen by readers in a National Public Radio poll as being among the one hundred greatest thrillers ever written, and Relic was made into a number-one box office hit movie. They are coauthors of the famed Pendergast series and their recent novels include Crooked River, Old Bones, Verses for the Dead, and City of Endless Night. In addition to his novels, Douglas Preston writes about archaeology for The New Yorker and National Geographic magazines. Lincoln Child is a Florida resident and former book editor who has published seven novels of his own, including bestsellers such as Full Wolf Moon and Deep Storm.

Miss Kat loves to dabble in the fine arts, and is starting a series of introductory videos to help you get started with lots of different media. Each week, we'll take a look at a new technique and try our hand at a new project! Instructional videos will be posted to our YouTube channel and Facebook page. This week, we're going to learn how to do contour drawing!
