DENVER, CO — Tewksbury Memorial High School graduate Scott Oberg announced his retirement from Major League Baseball Tuesday after five seasons as a relief pitcher for the Colorado Rockies.

Oberg, TMHS Class of 2008, has not pitched since 2019 due to multiple bouts with thoracic outlet syndrome, which led to four occurrences of blood clots in his right arm.

The 32-year-old righty made the announcement on social media and said he would be taking a part-time position with the Rockies as a special assistant to baseball operations.

"I have accepted a part-time position with the Rockies and will no longer be pursuing the game I've loved my whole life, as a player," Oberg wrote on Instagram. "I cannot thank those closest to me enough; from my family, friends, teammates and especially having the unwavering support of my wife. I could not have been able to accomplish anything without any of you. Love you all."

Oberg added: "And for all my coaches from T-Ball to college, from Tewksbury to Storrs to everywhere in-between and throughout pro ball, thank you for teaching me the right way to play the game and helping make the most out of my ability. I'm also indebted to my mental performance coach, Danielle! You literally changed my life and I cannot thank you enough."

Oberg, who pitched collegiately at UConn, appeared in 259 regular-season MLB games, going 18-8 with a 3.85 ERA and seven saves.

Arguably Oberg's biggest moment in the majors came in the 2018 National League Wild Card game against the Chicago Cubs, when Oberg struck out all four batters that he faced in the 12th and 13th innings in a 2-1 Colorado win at Wrigley Field.

Oberg was inducted into the TMHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018. During his career with the Redmen, Oberg went 14-3 with a 1.11 ERA.

According to the Tewksbury Town Crier, during his junior season, Oberg went 7-1 with a 1.00 ERA, which included complete-game shutouts against Billerica, Lawrence and Methuen, in which no runner advanced past second base.

As a senior, Oberg went 5-2 with a 1.09 ERA and helped lead the Redmen to a second consecutive Merrimack Valley Conference Division 2 championship title.

Oberg also received the TMHS Leadership Award during his senior year and had a 3.5 grade-point average in high school.

TMHS Athletic Director Ron Drouin, who was Oberg's baseball coach in high school, told the Tewksbury Town Crier in 2018 that Oberg was a "pleasure to coach" and a force on the mound.

"(Oberg) was as dominant a high school pitcher as this league has seen throughout his high school career," Drouin said. "He never gave up a lead — not once. Just think about that. He started 19 games for us and never lost a lead when given one.
