TEWKSBURY, MA — Tewksbury's Wamesit Lanes had its liquor license restored Monday, less than week after it was indefinitely suspended by the state, Feb. 23.

The suspension was related to a late 2020 inquiry into coronavirus mask regulations, the bowling alley confirmed on its website.

In an email to league members, the bowling alley said Monday that it had "great news."

"Based on the evidence presented, the commission reconsidered and reversed its prior order to suspend our liquor license," Wamesit Lanes said. "We are back in Business! Come celebrate with us tonight and every day this week! Just make sure to wear your mask!"

Owner Donny McLaren explained that the supposed violation arose from people seated around the lanes removing their masks. Under state rules at the time of the supposed violation, people at restaurants were allowed to remove their masks while seated and dining. The dispute centered on whether the seating by the bowling lanes counted as part of the restaurant.

In restoring the license Monday, the state agreed that the seating by the lanes is part of the restaurant.

Patch has requested documents related to the suspension from the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.

"We have submitted all documentation to the Department of Labor Standards and have been approved to be reviewed by the Commission," Wamesit Lanes said on its website. "We anticipate a quick resolution of this matter and appreciate all of the support that we have received."

The bowling alley said it has held itself to the highest safety standards and follows state protocols aimed at reducing the spread of the virus.
