WAKEFIELD, MA — Wakefield community members have a handful of opportunities to get involved in local government this month, with various seats now open on the town Zoning Board of Appeals and the Environmental Sustainability Committee.

The town announced the openings in recent weeks. Deadlines to apply to be appointed to the seats are now rapidly approaching.

The eventual Zoning Board of Appeals appointee will fill a term as a voting member of the board through April 30, 2023. The application is open to anyone, including current alternate members of the board.

Applications are available online and should be sent by email with a resume to Town Administrator Executive Assistant Sherri Dalton at [email protected] by Friday, Oct. 21.

The Zoning Board of Appeals handles a variety of duties including review of applications for special permits, requests for variances and appeals of decisions of the town zoning administrator.

The board generally meets twice per month on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month.

The Wakefield Town Council is expecting to make its appointment to the Zoning Board of Appeals on Nov. 14, according to a town announcement on Oct. 5.

Outside of the Zoning Board of Appeals, Wakefield’s Environmental Sustainability Committee is looking to add one or more area students to its ranks as non-voting members.

The committee works with various town officials, departments, boards and committees on sustainability and environmental stewardship efforts, as noted in an announcement on Thursday.

Student representative seats are open to individuals ages 15 through 18 who live in Wakefield. Members will be able to participate in committee discussions and deliberations, though they will not be able to cast votes.

The committee meets monthly usually on the second Thursday of each month.

Anyone interested in being appointed to a student representative role should complete their application, available online, and send it by email to Dalton by Oct. 28. Resumes can be included if available, but are not required.
