Wayland Filmmaker Earns GBH McGhee Fellowship

Michelle Mizner has worked on FRONTLINE, and edited and produced the Academy Award-winning documentary "20 Days in Mariupol."

WAYLAND, MA — Wayland filmmaker Michelle Mizner was recently awarded a GBH fellowship, celebrating her career so far editing and producing the news show FRONTLINE PBS. Mizner is also a filmmaker who was worked on documentaries included the Academy Award-winning "20 Days In Mariupol" about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the Peabody Award-winning "Separated: Children at the Border."

Boston public media producer GBH has awarded fellowships to eight outstanding producers, recognizing excellence, potential, and creativity. The recipients of the 2024 - 2025 Fellowship Awards are Alyson Roseman, Louise Flannery, Hannah Reale, and Alexi Cohan for the Becton Fellowship; Kathleen DiPerna, Shirin Jaafari, and Jessica Andrews for the Margret and Hans Rey Fellowship; and Michelle Mizner for the Peter S. McGhee Fellowship. With the fellowship grants, recipients can explore future professional development opportunities.

“These eight producers have demonstrated a dedication to creating exceptional content. From promoting STEM learning in early childhood to covering overseas conflicts, each fellow has set a high standard for creativity and innovation,” said GBH President and CEO Susan Goldberg. “We are proud to celebrate the work of our 2024 - 2025 fellows and look forward to their continued growth and success.”

Named after GBH’s former head of national programming, the Peter S. McGhee Fellowship is annually awarded to a mid-career filmmaker who has demonstrated exceptional promise in non-fiction television production, embodying the standards set by McGhee, including excellence, intelligence, fairness, passion, and scholarship.

GBH’s 2024-2025 Peter S. McGhee Fellow is:

  • Michelle Mizner: Mizner is an Academy and Emmy Award-winning documentary film producer and editor. For over a decade she has been on staff at FRONTLINE PBS, working to craft compelling narratives from archive and original footage while meeting the high editorial standards of the series. She has also produced podcasts and multiple acclaimed interactive web documentaries. Most recently, Mizner edited and produced the feature documentary 20 Days in Mariupol (2023, directed by Mstyslav Chernov) which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. She attended film school at California State University, Northridge.
