WAYLAND, MA — Wayland police are asking town residents to take precautions with packages due to a rise in recent thefts.

Police say thieves are specifically targeting packages shipped by FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service containing iPhones.

"These thefts mainly occur immediately after the package is delivered, leading us to believe that tracking numbers are being compromised/sold, to assist the package thieves," the department said in an advisory.

What can you do to avoid a theft? If you can, use delivery alerts to be at home at the moment your shipment arrives. Residents can also require a signature upon delivery, or have devices shipped to a secure location, like a PO box or FedEx store — there's one at Wayland Pack and Ship, 297 Boston Post Road.
