79-Year-Old Tewksbury Man Struck And Killed In Wilmington Parking Lot

The man was walking when he was hit by a car driven by a 60-year-old Reading woman. The victim died of his injuries at a local hospital.

WILMINGTON, MA — A 79-year-old Tewksbury man was killed Monday afternoon when he was struck by a car while walking in the parking lot of the East Gate Center shopping center, the Wilmington Police Department said.

Authorities have not named the man publicly, but police said he was transported to Lahey Clinic by ambulance, where he later died.

Police said a 60-year-old Reading woman was the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash. She remained at the scene, the WPD said. Authorities have not announced if any charges will be filed in the crash.

According to police reports, at 1:22 p.m., WPD officers and Wilmington Fire Department personnel responded to calls about a motor vehicle crash in the parking lot of the shopping center, located at 211 Lowell Street.

Boston 25 News reported that witnesses said the woman, driving a Honda CR-V, was backing up when she hit the victim, crushing him behind a Subaru Impreza.

Both cars showed visible damage at the scene according to Boston 25 News.

"Somebody was screaming, I'm not sure who it was," Donna Bruce, an employee at a nearby liquor store, told Boston 25 News. "He had his bags and he was walking to his car … I saw him on the ground, awful. I've never seen anything like that before."

Wilmington police said the crash is under investigation by members of its department and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section.
